Red Cooper has been in business for quite some time now, over 30 years as a matter of fact. The Texas citrus industry in the Rio Grande Valley has a proud heritage that dates back to 1893 and Red Cooper is happy to be a part of the business. Getting started has humbled beginnings here in deep South Texas. Legend tells us that a traveling priest visited Laguna Seca Ranch near Edinburg, Texas, where he gave children of the ranch family orange seeds. And from these very seeds sprouted the earliest plantings of citrus in South Texas. In the early 1900's the adventurous pioneers of Texas began growing various varieties of citrus and so the industry has evolved to where it is today. It only takes one bite and you'll agree, Texas Rio Red Grapefruit are some of the largest, sweetest and juiciest fruit ever grown.

Red Cooper has been a proud part of this wonderful tradition over the years. This is serious business for the Cooper family. Careful nurturing of each and every orchard takes top priority. Every day during the growing season, the trees are inspected to ensure proper growing conditions are met. The results are beautiful trees growing those lovely clusters of fruit. Did you know that “grape-fruit” got its name because of the grape-like clusters in which it is grown? About the middle or end of October, depending on the growing conditions, the excitement begins with  the kick-off of harvest. Harvesting crews start their days at the crack of dawn and hand-pick only the fruit which have reached the peak of perfection.  The fruit is then promptly and carefully hand packed and delivered right to the door.
